Choosing a floral for your wall

The decision that matters most is scale, not colour. A large-scale bloom — one flower spanning two or three feet — reads as artwork and needs a wall you can stand back from, so it belongs behind a bed or a sofa rather than in a corridor. A small, repeating sprig reads as texture instead, holds up in tight spaces, and forgives a wall that is not perfectly flat.

The second decision is ground colour. Florals on cream or warm white feel soft and stay quiet next to wood and linen. The same flowers on charcoal or deep green become dramatic and pull all the attention in the room, which is a good thing behind a bed and a difficult thing in a small home office where you need to concentrate.

What florals do to a room

Painterly, loose florals soften hard architecture: new-build corners, flat drywall, boxy rooms. Tighter, more graphic florals do the opposite and add structure to a room full of soft furnishings.

If you are papering one wall rather than four, put the flowers where the eye already goes — the headboard wall, the chimney breast, the wall you see from the doorway. Papering the wall behind you as you sit is a common and expensive mistake.
