Why toile is so forgiving

Toile is drawn in a single ink colour on an off-white ground. That is the whole reason it behaves so well: there is exactly one colour to match in your room, and from more than a few feet away the pattern reads as a soft tone rather than as a picture. You get detail up close and calm from across the room, which is a combination almost nothing else offers.

It is the safest pattern to use on all four walls of a small room — a cloakroom, a landing, a box room — because it does not build up the way a multi-colour pattern does.

Choosing the ink colour

Classic toile blue is cool and reads slightly formal; it sits well with white joinery and dark timber. Red and oxblood are warmer and more domestic, and they are the best choice next to terracotta, brick or a lot of brass. Sage and olive are the quietest of the four and the easiest with existing green or wood.

Black and charcoal toile is a modern reading of an old pattern and behaves very differently — much more graphic, much more present. Treat it as you would a gothic design rather than as a traditional toile.

Measure the wall at its widest and tallest point, type those numbers in, and the price updates as you go. Every panel is printed with a trim allowance on each edge, free, for a clean finish at the ceiling and baseboard.
