Botanical is not floral

A floral is about the bloom; a botanical is about the plant. That sounds like hair-splitting until you put them on a wall. Flowers carry colour and romance and a strong point of view. Leaves, stems, ferns and seed heads carry structure and green, and they behave much more like texture — which is why botanicals sit comfortably in kitchens, home offices and hallways, where a big floral would feel like a statement you have to keep agreeing with.

They are also the most forgiving thing to combine. A botanical wall rarely fights with a patterned rug or an existing sofa, because it reads as one colour from across the room.

Ground colour does the work

The plants in a botanical are usually drawn in one or two colours, so the background is what decides the mood. On cream or pale plaster the result is airy and close to a study or a herbarium sheet. On deep green, ink or near-black the same drawing becomes dramatic and lamplit, and works best somewhere you use in the evening — a dining room, a snug, a hallway with warm lighting.

If the room is north-facing and cool, lean warm. Botanical greens are the first colour to turn grey in flat northern light.
