Depth is the point

Forest murals work through perspective. The trees nearest you are dark and sharp, the ones behind them fade into haze, and your eye reads that as space. Hang one on the short wall of a narrow room and the room stops feeling narrow.

Because the effect depends on perspective, forest murals are the type most damaged by cropping badly. Keep the horizon roughly at eye height when seated — around four feet from the floor in a living room, a little lower in a bedroom — and avoid cutting the tree tops off at the ceiling.

Colour temperature

Misty, blue-grey forests are quiet and recede; they are the safest choice for a bedroom or a room you work in. Warm, golden-hour forests advance and bring energy, which suits a dining room or a stair.

Monochrome and near-monochrome forests behave almost like a large charcoal drawing. They sit well in rooms with strong black metal fittings and they are the easiest forest to combine with existing patterned furniture.
