Animal patterns split cleanly into two groups. Soft, rounded, friendly drawings belong in a nursery or a child's room. Detailed line drawings — the kind that look like a page out of an old zoological survey — belong in a study, a dining room or a downstairs cloakroom, and look completely wrong in a nursery.

Check which group a design is in before you buy for a grown-up room. The clue is the line weight: even, delicate lines read as adult; thick, simplified outlines read as young.

Scale changes everything

A whale printed eight feet across is a piece of art. The same whale at six inches, repeated, is a pattern. Both are legitimate, but they do different jobs, so decide which you want before you enter a wall size.

For a repeating animal print on a large wall, use the motif scale control on the product page rather than stretching the design. It resizes the drawing properly instead of distorting it.

Measure the wall at its widest and tallest point, type those numbers in, and the price updates as you go. Every panel is printed with a trim allowance on each edge, free, for a clean finish at the ceiling and baseboard.
