Rooms that are used at night

Because you mainly see this room under artificial light, the palette can be much deeper than you would dare in a kitchen. Dark grounds, gold, deep green and ink all come alive under a pendant and candlelight, and look expensive rather than gloomy.

Chinoiserie, botanical plates and art deco patterns have been dining-room decoration for two centuries for exactly this reason: they have enough detail to hold attention across a long meal.

Papering all four walls

The dining room is the room where wrapping the whole space actually works. It is usually small, usually enclosed, and being surrounded by pattern is part of the effect.

If that feels like too much, run the mural to a dado or chair rail and paint below it in the mural's darkest colour. It protects the paper from chair backs and looks considered.
