How gold behaves on a wall

Printed gold has no reflective metal in it, so it will not flash like leaf. What it does is give a design warmth and a sense of age, particularly against dark grounds. Under warm lamplight it reads convincingly metallic; under cold daylight it reads as ochre. That shift is the reason gold-on-navy and gold-on-black designs look best in rooms used at night.

What to put gold next to

Gold with navy, black, deep green or plum. Real brass fittings in the room complete the effect, because the actual metal supplies the shine the print cannot. Gold with cool grey is the combination to avoid.
