How black behaves on a wall

Black absorbs light instead of bouncing it, so the walls stop announcing where the room ends. In a small cloakroom or a dining room that reads as depth and drama rather than darkness. In a room you work in during the day it reads as gloom. Black is also the ground that makes any other colour in the design glow, which is why dark florals are so effective.

What to put black next to

Black needs one warm light source and one reflective material — brass, gilt, a mirror, candlelight. Against them it reads expensive. Against cool white LED downlights it reads flat. Keep the ceiling lighter unless you intend the whole room to disappear.
