What makes a design art deco

Symmetry, repetition and strong vertical rhythm, with metallic warmth against a dark ground. Deco patterns are built from arcs and straight lines with nothing organic in them, which is why they read as architectural rather than decorative.

Making it work in a real room

Deco needs a room with lines: a fireplace, panelling, tall windows, a proper light fitting. Its vertical rhythm makes a low ceiling read taller, which is a real and useful trick. Brass and dark timber complete it; oak and rattan fight it. It is the style most likely to look like a film set if the rest of the room does not commit.
