Picking the wall

Three candidates, in order. The chimney breast, if you have one — it is already a feature and the mural makes it read as intentional. The wall behind the sofa, which frames the seating and is rarely looked at directly. The wall you face from the main seat, which is the boldest choice because you will look at it for hours.

Avoid the wall with the television on it unless the design is quiet. A busy mural behind a screen is exhausting.

Living with it every evening

This is the room you sit in longest, so err calmer than you would in a hallway. Designs with depth — forests, ridges, painterly abstracts — hold interest without demanding it. High-contrast graphic patterns are better in rooms you pass through.

Check the mural against your largest soft surface rather than your paint. If the sofa and the rug both sit comfortably with the mural's two main colours, the room will work.

Every mural is printed to the wall size you enter, so there is nothing to cut down and nothing left over. Measure the wall at its widest and tallest point, type those numbers in, and the price updates as you go. Every panel is printed with a trim allowance on each edge, free, for a clean finish at the ceiling and baseboard.
