The headboard wall

You never see the wall behind your bed while you are in the room, which is the point. It is the wall you see from the doorway and the one that frames you in every photograph of the room, so it can carry far more pattern than a wall you look at from the pillow.

Measure the full wall, not the width of the bed. A mural that stops where the headboard stops looks like a mistake; one that runs floor to ceiling and corner to corner looks deliberate. Around a third of the design will be hidden behind the bed, so avoid compositions where everything important sits low.

What helps you sleep

Low contrast. A mural where the lightest and darkest parts are close together reads as restful; one with sharp black-and-white contrast keeps the eye working. Misty forests, layered ridges, soft florals and abstract washes all do this well.

Colour matters less than people expect. A deep green or navy bedroom is often calmer than a pale one, because the room stops reflecting light around at night.
