Why abstract is the safe brave choice

Abstract lets you use a lot of colour without committing to a motif. There is no scale to get wrong, no horizon to line up, and no subject to tire of — which makes it the easiest category to be bold in.

It is also the most forgiving on difficult walls. A sloped ceiling, an awkward alcove or a wall broken up by doors will destroy a landscape and barely affect a wash of colour.

Reading the palette

Treat an abstract mural as a large area of paint with movement in it. Take its two dominant colours and check they work with your floor and your largest piece of furniture; ignore the rest.

Fluid, painterly abstracts feel warm and handmade. Hard-edged geometric abstracts feel modern and architectural. Terrazzo and speckle sit between the two and are the most neutral way to add colour to a small room.
