How orange behaves on a wall

Orange advances, making a wall feel closer, which is useful in a room that feels too tall or too long and unhelpful in a small square one. Terracotta and rust carry enough brown to stay calm; bright orange does not and belongs in small doses. In north-facing rooms, orange is the most effective colour for putting warmth back.

What to put orange next to

Terracotta with sage, cream and unglazed clay is the current pairing and a durable one. Rust with navy or deep teal is sharper. Orange against cold grey looks cheap; against warm timber it looks inevitable.
