How yellow behaves on a wall

Yellow reflects a lot of light and throws it back into the room, warming everything it touches — including faces, which is why it works in kitchens and breakfast rooms. Ochre and mustard are the stable versions; bright lemon shifts dramatically between daylight and bulb light and rarely looks the same twice.

What to put yellow next to

Ochre with grey, charcoal or deep blue is the safest strong pairing. Yellow with white alone can look thin. In a child's room, yellow as an accent inside a mural is easier to live with than yellow as the ground.
