European painting in a Chinese idiom: flowering branches that climb rather than repeat, birds placed as incidents in the composition, and a ground of cream, blush, sage or ink. The composition is asymmetric and the drawing is painted rather than graphic, which is why it never reads as busy despite carrying a lot of detail.

Chinoiserie is the design most often used across all four walls of a dining room or bedroom, because the branches connect around corners and the composition has no obvious repeat.
