Coastal without the theme

The failure mode of coastal decorating is theming: rope, anchors, stripes and a sign telling you the beach is that way. These murals avoid it by staying close to observed colour — the grey-green of cold water, the bleached gold of dune grass, the flat white of a cloud bank.

That restraint is what lets them work hundreds of miles inland. A tide line reads as a soft abstract band of colour before it reads as the sea.

Where the light helps

Coastal palettes are pale and cool, so they need light to stay alive. In a bright room they feel airy; in a dark, north-facing room the same mural can look grey and cold. If your room is short on daylight, choose the warmer sand and dune scenes over the blue and grey water ones.
