How white behaves on a wall

White reflects whatever light it is given, which makes it the safest colour in a dark room and the least interesting in a bright one. A white mural earns its place through relief and detail — plaster, linen, fine line work — rather than through colour. In a north-facing room, warm whites with a cream base hold up; cold blue-whites can go grey by mid-afternoon.

What to put white next to

White works hardest next to something with weight: black metal fittings, dark timber, a deep rug. Against pale furniture on a pale floor it disappears, which is occasionally what you want in a small bathroom and rarely what you want in a living room.
