Dark rooms, not dark corners

The mistake with a gothic mural is using it to fix a gloomy room. It does not fix gloom; it commits to it. Put one in a room that is already dim and the result is murky. Put one in a room with good light and you get contrast — the drama only reads when there is something for it to be dramatic against.

The best rooms for this are the ones you use after dark: a dining room, a snug, a study, a hallway with lamps rather than a ceiling light. A gothic wall under a single warm lamp is one of the best things a mural can do. Under a cold overhead bulb it is a grey wall.

Living with a dark wall

One wall, almost always. Four dark walls is a different project and needs the ceiling, the floor and the joinery to agree with it.

Keep whatever is in front of the mural pale — a bed, a sofa, a console — so there is a silhouette rather than a dark mass. And be honest about scale: a gothic design with fine linework loses its detail beyond about ten feet, so in a large room choose one with large shapes and let the detail be a reward for standing close.
