Scale is the only real decision

Damask is always the same idea — a symmetrical motif mirrored and repeated — so what separates one from another is how big that motif is. A large damask, where a single motif spans a foot or more, reads as architecture and needs a wall you can see whole. A small one reads as texture and disappears into the room, which is what you want in a hallway or behind a lot of furniture.

Get this wrong and a room feels either empty or restless. If in doubt, go larger on a big flat wall and smaller in a broken-up room with doors and windows in it.

Tone on tone, or contrast

A tonal damask — motif and ground a shade apart, often with a slight sheen in the drawing — is the classic treatment and the easiest to live with. It gives a wall depth without giving it a pattern you have to think about.

High-contrast damask, ink on cream or gold on black, is a different animal: graphic, period and deliberate. It carries a room on its own, so keep the rest of the room plain and treat it the way you would a gothic design.

Measure the wall at its widest and tallest point, type those numbers in, and the price updates as you go. Every panel is printed with a trim allowance on each edge, free, for a clean finish at the ceiling and baseboard.
