A wall that behaves like a painting

These are the most demanding designs in the catalogue and the most rewarding when they land. A classical scene has a composition — a focal point, a direction of light, figures arranged for a specific frame — so unlike a repeating pattern it cares a great deal where its edges fall.

Use the crop tool. Decide what belongs in the centre of the wall before you order, and check what the ceiling line cuts. A fresco with the top eight inches of sky missing still works; one with a head cut off does not.

Frescoes, engravings and grisaille

Fresco-effect designs carry plaster texture and soft, chalky colour. They suit rooms with imperfect walls, because the mural is already pretending to be an old one.

Engraved and etched plates are line drawings — monochrome, fine, quiet from a distance. They behave like toile and are the safest of the three in a small room. Grisaille sits between the two: painting done entirely in greys, which gives you the drama of a classical scene without adding a single colour to the room.
